Dr. Francis Perry Wilson, M.D.

Dr. Francis Perry Wilson is a physician with board certifications in nephrology and internal medicine. He attended medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology.

Dr. Wilson treats patients at Yale New Haven Hospital who have kidney issues or develop issues while in the hospital. In addition, he serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the Yale University School of Medicine where is he also the Director of the Clinical and Translational Research Accelerator and Co-Director of the Human Genetics and Clinical Research Core.

Dr. Wilson conducts research to find ways of personalizing medical care for each patient. His work has focused on developing tools to help providers improve their methods and standards of care.

In addition to focusing on personalized care, Dr. Wilson spends a significant amount of time working to improve patient-doctor communication. He created the popular online course “Understanding Medical Research: Your Facebook Friend is Wrong” on Coursera, and has written a book in service of the same goals: How Medicine Works and When It Doesn’t. Both his course and book aim to get patients and doctors on the same page to foster an understanding. He is known internationally for his expertise in design and interpretation of medical studies.

He has been featured in several online publications, including Medpage Today and The Huffington Post. He is a recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. Dr. Wilson works with the editorial team at ELSM to ensure the accuracy of medical and scientific content.
